Coral reefs are among the most biologically diverse ecosystems on Earth. These vital ecosystems now face grave threats to their survival from destructive fishing practices, sedimentation, pollution and above all climate change-induced bleaching events.
The MSC Foundation has been working with leading coral and marine experts since 2018 to research, develop, test and refine methods to reverse the decline in coral reefs in the 64-square-mile Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve in The Bahamas.

Better biodiversity data is urgently needed to accelerate progress towards a nature positive future and MSC is now collecting this important data with nature intelligence by NatureMetrics. Whilst on-board, the team will collect eDNA samples across the North Atlantic, generating and sharing up-to-date biodiversity data with NatureMetrics and IUCN’s eBioAtlas programme, enabling marine species assessments and reassessments of the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in the region.
The first ship to be used for sampling will be MSC Euribia, with the eDNA sampling in the Nordic region being an important step in their commitment towards marine conservation.

We recognize that there is always more that can be done and we are constantly challenging ourselves to do better. That’s why we – for our entire fleet – are determined to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, achieving an overall balance between greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) emitted and greenhouse gases taken out of the atmosphere or avoided through the production of renewable fuels.
To accomplish this goal, we will implement various measures, such as transitioning to renewable fuels, adopting energy-efficient technologies, and optimizing operational practices. For instance, producing and using renewable fuels can significantly reduce overall lifecycle emissions when compared to fossil fuels in a number of ways. One example is the prevention of emissions from agricultural and municipal wastes that can instead be used to produce biofuels, or even by capturing carbon for use in synthetic fuels.

For MSC Euribia’s departure from her shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, we have purchased over 400 tonnes of liquefied biogas (bio-LNG), produced from agricultural and municipal waste, using a mass-balance system that it has also been independently certified for sustainability credentials. The bio-LNG enables substantial lifecycle emissions reductions, on a well-to-wake basis, compared to conventional fossil fuels, and MSC Euribia’s first voyage represents another step in our energy transition toward net-zero emissions by 2050.
A team of dedicated energy efficiency specialists from both MSC Cruises and Chantiers de L’Atlantique will be on board to monitor and optimize every aspect of this voyage, from the configuration of the engines down to the speed of individual air-conditioning fans in guest cabins. And that’s not all: itinerary and speed will be optimized, too. All of these combined initiatives will save energy to reduce fuel consumption.

MSC Euribia is the second ship in MSC Cruises’ fleet to be powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), currently the cleanest conventional marine fuel commercially available at scale. Not only does it release considerably less harmful emissions, but it’s also more efficient.
For the science-minded, here are the figures: LNG reduces sulphur oxide (SOx) emissions by 99% and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by up to 85% compared with conventional marine fuels, while reducing CO2e emissions by up to 20%.
